Physical Workouts for Golfers

Welcome to the workouts for golfers section of my website.

Pro Golfers and Fitness...

Camilo Villegas and John Daly
It's pretty fair to say that all top level pro golfers now recognise physical fitness as important aspect in their training.

At the time that I write this page, the hottest player in the news is "Race to Dubai" winner Lee Westwood. In just about every article written on him over the past year or two there has been a mention of the golf fitness work he has been doing.

Here you can read about Lee Westwood's golf workout program in detail.

While you are waiting for more pages to appear in this section, it might be worth a glance at what some other pro golfers have to say about fitness as well. You'll find it on individual pro golfers' websites: Darren Clarke, Paul McGinley, in magazine articles: Justin Rose (magazine article), whole institutions are in the business: Titleist Performance Institute (where many tour pros work with experts), and then of course there's the website of... Tiger Woods !

(by the way... I have a really cool article about a day spent in the company of Tiger Woods to share with you. It was written by a friend of mine who is a pro golfer too. Please check back soon for that...)

The importance of fitness in golf...

Some pro golfers talk about optimising their performance through physical training, others are more concerned with recovering from or preventing future injury.

Personally, I like to keep very active anyway and I believe physical training is important for one more very important reason:

In order to see a long tournament season all the way through to the end, there is a certain stamina required. A challenging golf workout program calls upon that physical as well as mental resilience. It can therefore provide a valuable off-season opportunity to train and develop such strengths. I find that the winter work sticks with me through the long summer weeks "on the road".

Running on the beach

Running on the beach is not for everyone but nonetheless, it's abundantly clear that all levels of golfer would benefit from some sort of physical training exercise. One talks about comprehensive and specific workouts for golfers but even just mixing in a few simple warm up and warm down stretching exercises could make a difference. Taking action in this area can put a golfer on the road towards: preventing pulled back muscles, put a few yards on the drives, and help grind out a performance at the end of a round when it counts.

My golf workout program...

Fortunately I have no major injury concerns, however it is of great concern that I am able to stay healthy for a lifetime of golf. Plus a few extra yards are most welcome! I'm confident that I have the best possible chance of achieving both of those objectives with Laurent Bosquet on my team.

Fitness Testing...

It's all well and good for me to talk about following a golf workout program.

You know that sometimes I'll just not be disciplined enough to keep up the good work because it's difficult. It's difficult to actually DO that run in the rain or complete that stabilty session when there's a hot cuppa or a cold beer waiting in the fridge!

However, if I know I have one of those Golfer Fitness Tests with my physical trainer Laurent Bosquet just around the corner, then I am far more motivated to work at this part of my training.

Garage Golf Workouts...

For anyone interested in the fitness exercises that I am doing this winter, I am going to stick a few short videos on.

One or two of my initial attempts are online already... you can check out my Garage Golf Workouts to find out what that's about!

Over time I'll expand this page with more pages and links to information upon workouts for golfers.

Specific workouts for golfers...

In my career to date, I have been fortunate to work with some outstanding fitness experts across a broad spectrum of disciplines. Whenever possible I like to train with with players and coaches from other sports.

In fact, I think you might be surprised to find out that the sporting activities and physical training exercises pro golfers like to do outside of their playing season, aren't always as "specific" as you might expect. Balanced workouts for golfers are likely to include both general and specific physical training exercises. Personally in any case, I appreciate all physical challenges and would prize adaptability over rigidity in performance any day of the week.
